From Chaos to Magic: The Detty December Thriller That Shaped My 2025 Resolution
What do you do when everything falls apart hours before a high-stakes event? You panic for 10 seconds, grab some coffee, and get to work.
It was Detty December in Lagos, and my team was booked to deliver a stunning 300-guest garden banquet. The concept? Perfection: twinkling chandeliers, lush floral centerpieces, silver chairs, and white tablecloths under a sparkling marquee. What could go wrong? Apparently… everything.
At 11 p.m., the call came: “Boss, the marquee is… wrong.” When I arrived, I wished the marquee was the only problem. It was dirty, the wrong size, and barely standing. The chandeliers? A pile of loose beads. The centrepieces? Mismatched. And my pristine white tablecloths? Missing in action.
To top it off, two team members decided they had seen enough and walked out. It was 2 a.m., and the event was set to start at 9 a.m. This wasn’t an event setup—it was a scene from a disaster movie. But giving up? Not an option.
Act I: The Pivot Armed with nothing but a marker and sheer determination, I hit the marquee floor and redesigned the entire event concept. If the plan couldn’t work, we’d create a new one. Goodbye original vision, hello creative chaos.
Act II: The Reinforcements At 3 a.m., I called in my backup team from another site. Without hesitation, they dropped everything and arrived like superheroes. Together, we strung chandeliers by hand, polished the marquee, and turned mismatched items into “statement pieces.” Coffee flowed, adrenaline kicked in, and we pushed through. Special shoutout to my team Mariam, Frank, Moni, and Mathew—you turned “impossible” into “impressive.”
Act III: The Magic Moment By sunrise, the transformation was complete. The garden sparkled with elegant white tablecloths, twinkling chandeliers, and stunning centrepieces. Guests arrived to a magical event that ran seamlessly, blissfully unaware of the chaos that unfolded just hours earlier.
What I Learned:
1️⃣ Adaptability is everything. Challenges will come, but how you respond makes all the difference.
2️⃣ Leadership means showing up. When the stakes are high, being present inspires confidence and gets the job done.
As I step into 2025, these lessons are my guide: adapt, lead, and create magic—no matter what. What’s your wildest “we pulled it off” story?
